York Region looks forward to continued progress on the Yonge North Subway Extension
Today, on behalf of The Regional Municipality of York and York Regional Council, I commend the province in taking another positive step forward to further advance the work of the Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) through the release of a Request for Qualification.
As York Region continues to experience significant growth, this subway extension remains our number one transportation priority. York Region is expected to reach a population of more than 2 million residents and 1 million jobs by 2051. Advancing important projects like this is critical to ensure we can meet the needs of current residents while continuing to prepare for future population and job growth.
Once complete, this extension will bring the subway north of Finch Station to the City of Richmond Hill, City of Markham and City of Vaughan, providing travellers with more convenient travel options.
Advancing large infrastructure projects to support growing communities is not possible without the commitment and cooperation of all levels of government and the community. Again, I thank the Province of Ontario for the support of shared priorities to build strong and economically vibrant communities.
The YNSE project will create new jobs, support more than 94,000 daily trips and save over 13 tonnes of greenhouse gases per workday by replacing 3,300 bus trips. It will provide commuters across the GTA with a greater variety of transit and transportation options.
