Construction Projects in the City of Vaughan
The Regional Municipality of York is investing in and making transportation improvements a priority. We are improving Regional roads in the City of Vaughan to accommodate population growth, improve traffic flow, extend the life of roads and bridges and provide more options for pedestrians and cyclists.
To support Vaughan’s growing communities over the next five years, more than 20 construction projects have been planned. We are building, reconstructing and repairing Regional roads for you, for our communities and for the future in the City of Vaughan. We understand that traffic delays caused by construction in these areas are frustrating for commuters, local businesses and residents, however, we regularly review and analyze traveller data for each road project to determine the best options to ease traffic delays during construction.
Projects planned for the next five years include:
Road Reconstruction and Widening
Adding additional lanes and/or dedicated turn lanes for better traffic flow
Key locations include:
- Major Mackenzie Drive from Highway 50 to Pine Valley Drive
- Major Mackenzie Drive from Highway 400 to Jane Street
- Keele Street from Steeles Avenue to Highway 407
- Rutherford Road from Jane Street to Bathurst Street

Traffic Signals
We are upgrading traffic signals as part of our road projects to current standards and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requirements, including tactile walking surface indicators and standard push buttons with audible pedestrian signals.
Pedestrian and Cycling Facilities
We are building sidewalks, multi-use paths and bicycle lanes as part of Vaughan’s road reconstruction projects.
Transit Facilities
We are building a new transit terminal at Major Mackenzie Drive and Jane Street to support the surrounding community and the new Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, and ensuring existing bus stops are properly maintained and/or upgraded throughout the community.
Construction can be disruptive. To minimize impacts, York Region will:
- Make safety the highest priority
- Consider the needs of all road users including transit riders, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
- Keep as many lanes open as possible and avoid lane closures during peak periods whenever possible
- Do our best to avoid overlapping construction projects
- Communicate openly and frequently
- Follow COVID-19 Public Health guidelines
Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or delays related to COVID-19 Public Health guidelines. York Region will provide advance notice whenever possible. Follow @YorkRegionGovt on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates.
