Get a first or second bivalent COVID-19 booster dose this spring
Starting Thursday, April 6, 2023, a second booster dose of the bivalent COVID-19 vaccine will be available to individuals 65 years of age and older, plus additional eligible groups, as long as six months has passed since a previous dose or a confirmed COVID-19 infection. Keep up your immunity and receive a COVID-19 bivalent booster for the best protection against COVID-19.
A first booster dose of the bivalent COVID-19 vaccine is also strongly recommended for everyone five years of age and older. To book your appointment, visit york.ca/COVID19Vaccine, call Access York at 1-877-464-9675 or contact participating pharmacies.
You should receive a bivalent booster dose as soon as possible if you:
- Are five years of age or older and have not yet received a bivalent booster dose
- Received a bivalent booster dose six months ago or longer, AND are any of the following:
- 65 years of age or older
- A resident of a long-term care home, retirement home, congregate setting for seniors or elder care lodge
- Pregnant
- Immunocompromised (18 years and older)
- 55 years of age or older and identify as (or share a household with) a First Nations, Inuit or Metis individual
Immunity can decrease over time. Receiving booster dose keeps your protection against COVID-19 infection as strong as possible. Booster doses are critically important, especially for older individuals and people with underlying health conditions.
To be eligible for the bivalent vaccine individuals five years of age or older must have completed a primary series of COVID-19 vaccine. For most people, a primary series is two doses of vaccine; for those that have a weakened immune system, a primary series is three doses.
Booster doses are recommended even after a COVID-19 infection to prevent future reinfection and potential hospitalization.
