Recognizing International Day of Older Persons
On Tuesday, October 1, we honour and celebrate the resilience, wisdom and invaluable contributions of older adults across the world.
International Day of Older Persons is a special day to express our gratitude and respect for elders who shape our communities and pave the way for future generations. Their stories offer us a glimpse into the past and invaluable lessons to guide our present and future. Older persons play a vital role in our society, including teaching younger generations, volunteering and continuing to work in various fields.
In York Region, there are now more seniors than children, and by 2051, close to one in four York Region residents will be over age 65. While many seniors remain healthy, active and connected to their communities, some require additional supports and age-friendly services. The York Region 2024 to 2027 Plan to Support Seniors strives to foster healthy aging where seniors can continue to live, work and age in strong, caring and safe communities at all ages and stages of life.
