Leave Space Around Large Vehicles
Let’s increase safety for drivers and riders of E-scooters
Drivers and riders of E-scooters are running into the back of buses or hitting their side mirrors. It is safest to wait behind a bus instead of driving around it.
When approaching a transit bus:
- Avoid distractions
- Slow down
- Don’t follow too closely
- Be more aware
If you must pass, please give extra space:
- Be aware that bus mirrors extend beyond the bus making it wider than you may expect
- Anticipate the bus may move
- E-scooter riders need to watch for passengers exiting or entering the bus
Leave space around large vehicles
Large vehicles, including snow plows, buses and commercial trucks, need extra space to stop and turn and have many blind spots.
Sideswipe and rear-end collisions are common types of collisions with large vehicles. These collisions can be prevented when drivers of passenger vehicles leave plenty of space. Driving slower and leaving space between vehicles gives drivers more time to react.
While large vehicles may cause delays and driver frustration, they provide essential services and goods to our communities. Commercial trucks, buses and snow plows need space and deserve respect, especially as the need for goods and services continues to grow in York Region.
