Plan to Support Seniors
There are now more seniors than children in York Region. By 2051, close to one in four (23%) York Region residents will be over age 65. While many seniors remain healthy, active and connected to their communities, some require additional age-friendly health and social care services.
The 2024 to 2027 York Region Plan to Support Seniors: Navigating Forward Together (the Plan) includes priority areas, objectives and related actions and advocacy York Region will take to enhance health and well-being of our growing and diverse seniors population. It focuses on supporting seniors to “age in the right place” based on their preferences, circumstances and care needs.
The Plan helps achieve the Region’s Vision of strong, caring, safe communities and supports the 2023 to 2027 Strategic Plan Healthy Communities priority.
The Plan builds on successes of the 2016 Seniors Strategy and guiding principles:
- Evidence-based decision-making
- Partnerships, alignments and collaboration
- Prevention and promotion, and education
- Fiscal sustainability and balance
The Region is one of many service providers supporting seniors. Addressing current and future needs of our aging population requires collaborative planning and evidence-based innovation with all levels of government, local towns and cities, community organizations and the private sector.
Priority areas and objectives:
- Keeping Seniors Healthier, Longer - provide seniors, caregivers and staff supporting seniors information to help improve physical activity and social connectedness, and slow decline of, or prevent, chronic disease
- Supporting Seniors to Live in Age-Friendly Complete Communities - better integrate services for seniors
- Connecting Seniors and Caregivers to Right Programs and Services at Right Time - improve system navigation for seniors
- Improving Coordination, Organization and Planning of Services for Seniors - collaborate on and support strategic improvements for the overall system supporting seniors
