Traffic Data Collection/Request
Traffic cameras are a cost effective and innovative approach in collecting data. Video analysis determines the need for road/intersection improvements and safety measures.
A contractor, working on behalf of York Region, installs traffic cameras to collect data as part of the Region’s annual counting program. Traffic Counter Cameras and Traffic Counter Tubes are placed at signalized and unsignalized intersections, as well as midblock locations, across York Region.
The traffic cameras and tubes are moved throughout the Region to collect data. A traffic counter consists of tubes in the road, which collects information when a vehicle drives over it.
The cameras collect data weekly, between Tuesday and Thursday. The tubes collect data for one week, at each location they are placed.

Annual Traffic Counting Program
Every year, York Region collects traffic data at predetermined locations to support transportation planning, road designs, and to help identify and prioritize locations on our road network (such as intersections, highways, or specific streets) where safety improvements are most needed. The Region’s annual counting program collects data in two ways:
1. Intersection Traffic Counts
- These counts track vehicles entering and exiting intersections, including the directions they turn
- They are used to analyze traffic flow, design intersections, and determine future plans for our road network
2. Road Section Traffic Counts
- These counts measure traffic volume, speed, and vehicle types on road sections
- This data is critical for analyzing travel trends and guiding transportation planning initiatives
How do we determine locations for data collection?
At the beginning of each calendar year, a list of intersections or road sections are provided to York Region’s contractor for the annual counting program.
The Intersection Traffic Counts annual counting program ensures all unsignalized intersections are counted at least once every three years. The Road Section Traffic Counts annual counting program ensures all road sections are counted at least once every two years.
Additionally, York Region will conduct traffic counts at other locations outside of the predetermined list based on operational reviews or analyses to assess the need for road/intersection improvements or safety measures throughout the year.
