York Region Celebrates Black History Month

On behalf of York Regional Council, The Regional Municipality of York and our more than 1.2 million residents, it is my pleasure to recognize February as Black History Month. 

Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy experiences of Black Canadians, past and present, and their communities.  

Black people in Canada have diverse backgrounds and experiences. While some can trace their roots in Canada for many generations, others have immigrated in recent decades. They have contributed in many ways to the growth, diversity and development of Canada and during Black History Month, we celebrate the many achievements and contributions of these residents.  

As one of the most diverse communities in Canada, York Region is home to a fast-growing number of people who self-identify as Black or of African heritage. Between 1996 and 2016, the population of individuals in York Region who self-identify as Black grew by 102%. By 2021, individuals identifying as Black made up more than 5% of York Region’s population. 

In 2018, Regional Council endorsed the Inclusion Charter for York Region, committing to a welcoming and inclusive community where diversity is celebrated and where everyone can develop to their full potential, participate freely in society and live with respect, dignity and freedom from discrimination. 

In 2020, Regional Council officially recognized 2014-2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent, which aims to strengthen actions and measures to ensure the full realization of the economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights of people of African descent and their full and equal participation in society. York Region’s efforts to acknowledge and denounce systemic anti-Black racism align with the goals of this decade, and York Region continues to work with community partners to champion actions to address anti-Black racism. 

Throughout February and all year long, I encourage all residents to learn more, including the many important contributions of Black Canadians to the settlement, growth and development of our community and country.
