York Region celebrates Indigenous culture, heritage and history
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to recognize June as National Indigenous History Month and honour the unique heritage, culture and traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples from across our communities.
National Indigenous History Month is a time to celebrate but also an opportunity to learn and deepen our understanding of Indigenous culture, including histories, customs, spirituality and languages. Throughout the month of June, we recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of Indigenous Peoples and acknowledge their resilience throughout time on this land.
York Region residents are encouraged to learn more about the culture and history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples through the shared stories and voices of those with lived experience. Through active listening and engagement, each of us can gain a deeper understanding of the lasting effects of colonialism and how it has impacted the Indigenous experience.
The road to reconciliation is one that we as Canadians have been on for quite some time. Understanding the intertwined nature of Indigenous and Canadian history helps further our awareness in the role we all play in building strong, caring, safe communities for future generations.
York Region and York Regional Council are committed to fostering an inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all residents and communities. We actively acknowledge the discrimination, systemic racism and injustice the Indigenous community has faced and continues to face in Canada. We aim to play our part and recognize our responsibility to become allies for change on the path to reconciliation.
As we mark National Indigenous History Month, I ask residents across York Region to join with me and take time to honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples and thank them for sharing this land with us.
