York Region extends condolences on passing of Central York Fire Services Chief Ian Laing

On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I share deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Central York Fire Services Chief Ian Laing, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.  

Chief Laing joined Central York Fire Services in 2009, following more than 34 years of service with Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, where he held numerous positions.

For 48 years, Chief Lang dedicated his life to ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. He served with an unwavering commitment and courage, leaving an indelible mark on the fire service and the many lives he touched. Chief Lang was a leader in times of crisis, but also a mentor, friend and pillar of strength for many. He always had a smile, and he enlightened the lives of those around him.

Since 2009, Chief Laing served as the Regional Fire Coordinator for The Regional Municipality of York, providing critical support to York Region and our local cities and towns through the Regional Emergency Operations Centre. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Chief Laing was an invaluable partner in York Region’s emergency response, supporting fire services and residents across our communities. 

As Chief of Central York Fire Services, he played an instrumental role in the growth and advancement of the fire department, fostering a culture of professionalism, courage, camaraderie and excellence among firefighters.

Today, we remember Chief Laing as a steadfast leader who bravely confronted dangerous situations and led by example during critical incidents. His bravery and unwavering commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of our communities will serve as his legacy. 

During this difficult time, our thoughts remain with Chief Laing’s family, friends, colleagues and the entire Central York Fire Services family. The loss of a first responder is a loss to the whole community, who rely on our emergency services to protect our neighbourhoods and keep our communities strong, caring and safe. 

In honour of Chief Laing, flags at York Region’s Administrative Centre have been lowered to half-mast.
