National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York honours those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence. We also recommit ourselves to taking action to ensure women and girls can feel safe, respected and free from the threat of violence.
Today, we join Canadians across the country in paying tribute to the 14 young women who were senselessly murdered and the 13 others who were injured at École Polytechnique de Montréal 34 years ago.
As we remember the victims of this hateful act, we are also reminded that violence is a daily reality for countless women, girls and gender diverse people around the world. This unacceptable threat must be addressed. On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to foster a culture of empathy, equality and accountability and stand up to any form of violence against women.
Today, and throughout the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we must amplify the voices of those who have been silenced, remember those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence and honour the resilience of survivors.
Through lasting change, we can build a future where every individual, regardless of gender, can thrive in communities that value and protect their inherent safety and rights.
On behalf of Regional Council, I encourage our more than 1.2 million residents to raise your voice in solidarity and commit to ending gender-based violence. Together, we must challenge harmful attitudes, dismantle stereotypes and build a community where everyone feels safe and where survivors are supported and empowered.
