York Region pays tribute to the Honourable Murray Sinclair
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, we join communities and residents across the country in mourning the loss of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, Anishinaabe Senator, renowned lawyer and Manitoba’s first Aboriginal judge.
Mr. Sinclair’s tireless commitment to truth, justice and reconciliation – most notably though his leadership as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and his efforts to bring the realities of residential schools to light – has left an enduring legacy for our nation. His groundbreaking work in the legal system, coupled with his unwavering dedication to amplifying voices of survivors and revealing the truths of Canada’s history demonstrated unparalleled courage and compassion.
Through his wisdom and leadership, Mr. Sinclair profoundly reshaped our understanding of the past, compelling us to confront difficult truths while inspiring hope and action in our collective journey towards a more just and inclusive future.
We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Sinclair’s family and to all who mourn this significant loss.
As a mark of respect, flags at the York Region Administrative Centre at 17250 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket are lowered to half-mast in honour of Mr. Sinclair’s remarkable contributions to Canada and our path toward reconciliation.
