York Region welcomes Agreement in Principle for Yonge North Subway Extension
On behalf of The Regional Municipality of York and York Regional Council, today I am pleased to acknowledge the signing of Agreement In Principle with the Province of Ontario to advance construction of the Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE). This agreement represent a shared commitment to transforming transportation infrastructure that will support York Region’s rapid growth and enhance connectivity across the Greater Toronto Area.
As York Region approaches a population of over 2 million residents and 1 million jobs by 2051, the Yonge North Subway Extension remains Regional Council’s top transportation priority. This extension will bring the subway from Finch Station into the heart of York Region, extending to the cities of Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan, providing our residents with more efficient and sustainable travel options.
The YNSE is more than just a transportation project – it is a vital investment in the future of our communities. By facilitating over 94,000 daily trips, creating new jobs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 4,800 tonnes annually, this extension will play a critical role in building a strong, economically vibrant and environmentally sustainable region.
The progress we celebrate today by signing this agreement is possible thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Province of Ontario and the unwavering support of our community. I want to extend my deepest thanks to our partners at all levels of government for their shared vision of a connected and thriving region.
York Region looks forward to continuing our work with all partners to ensure the successful completion of this transformative project.
