York Regional Council appoints members for new term of Newcomer Inclusion Table
Newmarket – York Regional Council has approved the appointment of 30 members to the 2023 to 2026 term of the Newcomer Inclusion Table.
The Newcomer Inclusion Table, previously called the Community Partnership Council, is a multi-sectoral collaborative group that advises Regional Council and staff on the development and implementation of initiatives to support the successful integration of newcomers. Newcomers are residents who immigrated to Canada and have been here for less than five years.
“Since 2010, this important advisory group has played an important role in supporting newcomers,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “According to 2021 Census data, 53,495 recent immigrants settled in York Region between 2016 and 2021, accounting for over 84 percent of our population growth. Arriving with valuable education, skills and work experience, helping newcomers succeed drives York Region’s success.”
Newcomer Inclusion Table members include representation from diverse sectors, including government, settlement, language, employment, police, education, health and social services. The Newcomer Inclusion Table will also include community representatives with recent newcomer lived experience.
The table will help develop and implement a newcomer integration plan for York Region which will identify and address priorities to strengthen newcomer employability, support inclusive workplaces, promote multiculturalism and advance social inclusion. The plan will be submitted to Regional Council in 2023.
