York Region celebrates World Health Day
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am pleased to recognize Sunday, April 7, 2024, as World Health Day and acknowledge health as a fundamental human right for all.
As part of this year’s celebration, the World Health Organization is calling on individuals, communities and governments around the world to champion access to essential health services as a basic human right.
The 2024 World Health Day theme, My health, my right, envisions a world where everyone, everywhere has access to high quality health services, education and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing and decent environmental conditions.
As one of the fastest growing and most diverse communities in Canada, York Region recognizes access to available, accessible, acceptable and good quality health services is fundamental to the quality-of-life residents experience every day. This includes ensuring public health programs and services are equitable and free from discrimination.
At the same time, we know healthy living conditions and a sustainable environment can transform people’s lives and lead to a prosperous society. In York Region, building healthy communities and protecting the natural environment are key pillars of our corporate Strategic Plan. These goals focus on the livability, health, safety and social well-being of our communities and support access to high-quality health and social services.
As our communities continue to grow, Regional Council remains committed to working with all levels of government and our health care partners as we continue to build a strong, caring, safe York Region today and for future generations.
