Flags lowered at York Region facilities in recognition of National Day of Mourning
Today, on National Day of Mourning, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York stand together with residents across our communities, and our country, to observe a moment of silence in honour of those who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to work-related incidents.
We share this moment with the families and friends of fallen workers who mourn their loss every day.
National Day of Mourning is an opportunity to pause and pay our respects to those we have lost. It provides workers and employers a chance to reflect on workplace safety and give thought as to how we can work together to prevent future work-related tragedies, ensuring everyone can make it home safe at the end of each day.
York Region remains committed to the health and safety of all our employees and all who work in our communities. Everyone has the right to feel safe at work. Through diligent and deliberate actions carried out by both employers and workers, we can create healthier and safer workplaces.
In recognition of National Day of Mourning, flags at York Region facilities have been lowered to half-mast. Regional Council, staff and residents are asked to pause for a moment of silence at 11 a.m. to remember those who are no longer with us and to think of those who have suffered lasting impacts from a workplace injury.
On behalf of Regional Council, I extend my deepest sympathies and unwavering support to those grieving and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the health and safety of all workers in our communities.
