York Region recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I recognize Monday, September 30, 2024, as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and acknowledge the enduring impacts of residential schools and the ongoing journey towards reconciliation.
On this day, we pause to reflect on a painful chapter of Canadian history – the legacy of residential schools and the enduring trauma experienced by Indigenous Peoples. This day is a solemn reminder of the injustices faced by First Nations, Inuit and Métis children who were forcibly taken from their families, their culture and their language.
Reconciliation is not only about acknowledging the wrongs of the past but also about committing to meaningful actions for the future. As a Region, we are deeply committed to learning from these truths, fostering mutual understanding and working together with Indigenous communities to build strong, equitable relationships.
In York Region, we recognize that true reconciliation requires both listening and action. Whether through ongoing education, support of Indigenous-led initiatives or the continued inclusion of Indigenous perspectives on our decision-making processes, we are working to ensure the path forward is one of mutual respect and shared progress.
I encourage everyone across our communities to take time to reflect on how we all can play a role in this journey. Participate in local events, engage with educational resources and wear orange as a symbol of solidarity with survivors of residential schools and their families. As a community, we have an opportunity – and a responsibility – to contribute to the healing process and create a more inclusive, compassionate future for generations to come.
Together, let us honour this day by deepening our commitment to truth, justice and reconciliation.
As a symbol of the strength and courage of survivors and as a tribute to lives lost, York Region will fly the Every Child Matters flag at half-mast at 17250 Yonge Street and 17150 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket on Monday, September 30, 2024. The clock towers at the York Region Administrative Centre will also be illuminated orange from Friday, September 27 to Monday, September 30, 2024.
