York Region stands with victims of domestic and gender-based violence
As we begin the White Ribbon Campaign and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York stand united with communities across the globe to raise awareness and take action against violence that disproportionately impacts women, girls and gender-diverse individuals.
This important campaign reminds us that gender-based violence is a daily reality for countless individuals in our communities. It is an issue that affects us all, and it is our collective responsibility to create a world where violence is not tolerated and where safety, respect and equality are guaranteed for everyone.
We also take a moment to reflect on the tragic events of December 6, 1989, when 14 young women lost their lives in the École Polytechnique massacre. This senseless act of violence reminds us of the urgent need to end gender-based violence and create a society where no one is ever targeted because of their gender.
Throughout the next 16 days, we must amplify the voices of those who have been silenced, honour the memory of those who have lost their lives to violence and show our support for survivors. The White Ribbon Campaign is a call to action for us all to stand up against harmful behaviours and advocate for a society where everyone can feel safe and respected.
On behalf of Regional Council, I encourage York Region’s more than 1.25 million residents to come together to build a future where gender-based violence is no longer a threat, and all individuals are empowered to thrive.
In honour of the victims and survivors of gender-based violence, the clock tower at York Region’s Administrative Centre, located at 17250 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket, will be illuminated purple on Monday, November 25, 2024.
