York Region celebrates National Forest Week and the 100th anniversary of the York Region Forest
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to recognize September 22 to 28, 2024, as National Forest Week.
As we celebrate National Forest Week, it is important to reflect on the incredible value forests and trees provide – from clean air and water to wildlife habitat, recreation and climate resilience. This year is especially significant as we mark the 100th anniversary of the York Regional Forest, a century-long commitment to conservation and sustainable land stewardship.
Since its establishment in 1924, the York Regional Forest has grown from a modest reforestation initiative into a thriving network of more than 2,400 hectares, offering residents and visitors a space to connect with nature. This milestone is a testament to the foresight of past generations and the dedication of those who continue to care for and protect this precious resource today.
As we look ahead, Regional Council remains committed to preserving and enhancing our natural environment for future generations. Let’s take this week to celebrate our forests, acknowledge the important role they play in our daily lives and renew our collective commitment to protecting these vital ecosystems for the next century.
