FAST Action Saves Lives During a Stroke
In December 2023, Mike De Zilva, an energetic, healthy Toronto Police Staff Sergeant and Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville resident, faced a life-changing health emergency. After a routine workout, he suddenly suffered a stroke that left him unable to move his left side. As he collapsed, his 20-year-old daughter heard the bang and called 911.
York Region paramedics, Leslie Piluso and Da An Liang, immediately responded to the 911 call. Recognizing the urgency of his symptoms, they redirected transport to the closest designated stroke centre instead of the local hospital. This decision allowed Mike to receive a life-saving clot-busting drug to prevent permanent damage, aiding in his overall recovery.
Prior to leaving the hospital, the paramedics checked on Mike who was already able to raise his left arm to wave goodbye – a testament to the quick action of his family, paramedics and hospital staff.
Mike was released from hospital 10 days later and is now thriving in his recovery.
A stroke is a medical emergency. If you experience signs of a stroke, call 911. Do not drive to the hospital. Paramedics will take you to the closest hospital that provides urgent stroke care.
