How to become a paramedic in Ontario
Paramedics in Ontario are required to hold an Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant (AEMCA) certificate issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. They are also required to hold an F-class driver’s license with fewer than six demerit points and meet all immunization requirements as described under the Ambulance Act.
Most paramedics in Ontario will hold a Paramedic Diploma to gain eligibility to write the AEMCA exam. Paramedic Diplomas are issued by approved Paramedic programs run by private or public colleges across Ontario. Universities may also be partnered with colleges to offer degrees in conjunction with the paramedic diploma.
A requirement for completion of any paramedic program is to complete a field placement within an ambulance service. York Region Paramedic Services’ PCP Pathways Program offers a robust and comprehensive field placement experience for registered paramedic students.
