York Region celebrates Earth Day 2023
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to recognize Saturday, April 22, 2023, as Earth Day.
Today, residents across York Region join people around the world to celebrate our natural environment and focus on what we can all do to keep our planet healthy.
Once again, this international event calls on individuals, businesses and government organizations around the world to Invest in our Planet to preserve and protect our health, families and livelihoods.
There is no “planet B” and the responsibility to protect our environment is one we all share. In York Region, we aim to sustain and protect our natural environment through actions and plans that focus on the livability, health and safety of our community, while also reducing our ecological impact.
The Climate Change Action Plan approved by Regional Council sets a path for reduced emissions and prepares for our future climates with actions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. York Region’s Greening Strategy acts as a blueprint for on-the-ground action to create and maintain a healthy natural environment through tree planting, stewardship, education and conservation. And the SM4T Living Plan incorporates a circular economy approach to reduce waste and extend the lifecycle of goods, food and resources.
Investing in our planet is about helping to create a cleaner, healthier, more resilient and sustainable environment. Earth Day is an opportunity for us all to ask ourselves what more we can do to invest in the planet – not just for today, but for future generations.
