Celebrating Canada’s Agriculture Day
Today is Canada’s Agriculture Day, an opportunity to express our gratitude to farmers for their dedication and hard work in providing food for our communities. With over 600 farms in York Region and many more food processors, retailers and restaurants, the agri-food sector plays a significant role in supporting our local economy, providing over 57,000 jobs at a value of over $2.7 billion in GDP.
While the numbers are impressive, Canada’s Agriculture Day is about recognizing the people who work in agriculture. People like local farmers who work tirelessly to make sure our grocery store shelves and dinner tables are stocked with high-quality, fresh and healthy food.
It may be winter but there are still many ways to support local farmers near you. Whether you cook an all-Canadian meal, support a local restaurant, or simply thank a farmer, let’s all put our forks up and celebrate Canada’s Agriculture Day by choosing local. You can also visit YorkFarmFresh.com to find a local farm and other food products near you.
To York Region’s farmers and those in the broader agri-food sector, we say thank-you for the work you do in helping us build strong and resilient food systems.
