It’s National Infection Control Week: Protect yourself from illness
As we celebrate National Infection Control Week from October 16 to 20, and brace for colder weather, York Region Public Health encourages everyone to protect themselves and their loved ones from the spread of infections.
The theme of National Infection Control Week 2023 is “Unmasking the Future,” which recognizes lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic that can be used moving forward.
In Ontario, respiratory illnesses from COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) have been increasing, signaling the start of the cold and flu season.
Most people who become sick will recover without complications. However, some groups including young children, the elderly and people with certain medical conditions are at greater risk of developing severe health problems such as pneumonia, that may require hospitalization.
Here are some important measures to follow to protect yourself and your loved ones:
- Get the most up-to-date information about eligibility to get a COVID-19 and/or influenza (flu shot) vaccines
- Clean your hands often with soap and running water or alcohol-based hand rub, especially after sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose
- Stay home when you are sick
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze
- Clean and disinfect items and surfaces you touch frequently such as phones, door handles, tables and light switches
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces like public transit or at large gatherings
