Make memories, not waste this holiday season!
With the busy winter season, York Region knows trying to limit waste might be low on your list. That’s why we’ve put together our favourite tips to help limit your waste while celebrating the upcoming holidays.
Looking for the perfect gift?
When putting together a gift list, consider gifting experiences. Whether it’s a dinner and movie package, tickets to a play or concert, a relaxing spa day, or a gift certificate to a local ski hill, these options are waste-free, support local businesses and create cherished memories!
Still looking for a tangible gift? Consider exploring local shops for products with minimal packaging.
Another option is to buy used or vintage items and give them a second life. Try online platforms and marketplaces that offer affordable or even free secondhand items!
Finally, if you’re wrapping a gift, go for a reusable bag or fabric and ribbon to avoid creating waste.
Hosting a party?
Disposables may be convenient, but all that waste adds up. Rather than throwing away all those single-use plates, cups, napkins and cutlery, think about using a dishware and linen rental service. All you need to do is pack them into crates or bins provided and return them when done. Hassle-free with no cleaning or waste!
In need of some party supplies or a kitchen appliance for that special dessert or drink? See if you can borrow them from your local Lendery, which operates like a library of ‘things’-- and it’s free of charge!
Can’t find the perfect outfit?
Struggling to find a new dress or suit for your holiday party? Consider renting. With many online options providing rental services for less than buying new, you can wow guests in the latest festive fashions.
Too much food?
Making enough food to feed an army? Plan for leftovers. Pack up extras in small, reusable takeaway containers. This way, guests can take home that good food, savour it later and reuse the container.
You could also plan to use up leftovers in the days to come or freeze what you can for later. For leftover veggies, cheese or meat try using them in a simple frittata or pizza recipe.
Not sure where to start on your waste-free journey?
Learning what you can do to take part in the circular economy – a world where nothing goes to waste –is the first step in starting your journey.
