New Strategy Supports York Region’s Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector
York Region releases new 2024 to 2027 Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector Strategy, prioritizing the Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector.
The agriculture and agri-food sector is a significant contributor to the local economy. Did you know there are over 600 farms in York Region? The new strategy focuses on sustaining and supporting the entire local agri-food sector, including farms, processors, food retailers and restaurants.
Building on the success of York Region’s first Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector Strategy, the 2024-2027 strategy is a road map guiding the development of program initiatives and enables the sector to thrive for years to come, aiming to:
- Strengthen business, entrepreneurship and innovation services by enabling innovation and supporting skills development and attracting workers in the sector
- Bolster an already resilient and diverse value chain by facilitating continued growth and connection; continuing to build relationships with and fostering support for equity deserving and Indigenous communities; and promoting climate resilience impacting the sector
- Continue to educate and raise the profile of local agriculture and agri-food sector by expanding outreach and communication
The strategy will be implemented in collaboration with York Region’s nine local municipalities, the Agriculture and Agri-Food Advisory Committee and other key stakeholders. Continued communication and collaboration with agri-food stakeholders will be key to the successful implementation of this plan.
