FROM PUBLIC LIBRARY TO REPAIR CAFÉ
Repair Cafés are free events that bring together people with broken items with people who can fix them. It’s a perfect match for anyone with a broken blender, torn pair of pants or a sentimental keepsake that needs a fix.
This past month, York Region, in partnership with NewMakeIt, held the latest Repair Café at the Richmond Hill Public Library. With a full registration, it’s clear people are interested in Repair Cafés and all they have to offer.
Repairing an item is much more than fixing it.
It’s about saving something once loved or useful and keeping it in use. Repair Cafés are also about preventing things from going to waste and saving money. Why toss it away and buy a replacement if it just needs a simple fix?
Without volunteer fixers Repair Cafés would not be possible.
Their wealth of knowledge, patience and drive to solve each repair problem is essential to the success of this program. At this Repair Café a variety of items were fixed including several bicycles, a scooter, turntable, stereo, toaster, kettle and even a vintage Game Boy.
Since 2018, with the support of community partners and volunteers, York Region Repair Cafés have fixed over 550 items.
If you consider yourself handy, don’t let your repair skills go to waste! Fixers are always needed and welcome.
If you have something you would like fixed, it’s not too late. Four more Repair Cafés are planned this year in the Towns of Aurora, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville, and the City of Vaughan.
