York Region expands Automated Speed Enforcement Program
In December 2024, York Region is installing 20 Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras in fixed locations across all nine local cities and towns on Regional roads, with three mobile cameras continuing to rotate every three months in select community safety zones.
As part of York Region’s Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan, the ASE program improves road safety and changes driver behaviour. Aggressive driving (including speeding) collisions represent 45% of severe collisions on Regional roads. When an ASE camera is in the area, vehicle operating speeds are reduced by approximately 10 km/hr and speed limit compliance increases by approximately 25%.
To streamline payment and disputes, York Region has established an Administrative Penalty Tribunal for automated traffic penalties, including driving through red lights and speeding. Streamlined services include online and in-person options for payment and appeal, an accessible service counter in the Town of Newmarket and enhanced case management.
ASE program revenue supports road safety improvements as part of the Traveller Safety Plan, including installing roundabouts and intersection improvements like new traffic and pedestrian signals, protected left turn signals, street lighting and accessibility measures.
