Holland Landing Lagoons
November 06, 2023
Town of East Gwillimbury
The Regional Municipality of York is addressing recent reports of increased odour around the Holland Landing Lagoons at 19932 2nd Concession (Cedar Avenue) in the Town of East Gwillimbury. The Lagoons treat municipal wastewater from approximately 4,000 residents in the community of Holland Landing and are an integral part of the regional system in protecting the environment.
About wastewater facility odours
- Collecting and treating wastewater can sometimes cause unpleasant odours around York Region’s wastewater facilities
- These odours do not cause any threat to public health or the environment
- Seasonal changes in temperature, combined with filling the lagoon, caused the contents to mix naturally, resulting in ‘lake turnover’ which caused odours to be released
- York Region continues to follow industry best practices to minimize odours around the Lagoons
- The Region also monitors odours using odour sampling and air dispersion modelling around the Lagoons, which is a process that measures odour emissions from the Lagoons
- As we have ceased filling activities, the Region does not anticipate any further odours throughout the winter as the weather gets colder
When to report an unusual odour
Odours lasting more than one to two days coming from a York Region facility are considered unusual and should be reported.
