York Region mourns the death of Hazel McCallion
On behalf of York Regional Council, The Regional Municipality of York and our more than 1.2 million residents, I extend deepest condolences to the family and friends of former City of Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, who passed away peacefully at the age of 101.
First elected as Mayor of Mississauga in 1978, Hazel McCallion fiercely led her community for more than 36 years. During that time, she grew Mississauga from a small collection of towns and villages into Canada’s seventh largest city. She continued a “life of purpose” following her political retirement.
Known worldwide as “Hurricane Hazel” for her outspoken political style, Ms. McCallion dedicated her life to building a community for the people. She often spoke out on the issues others remained silent on and was never afraid to take on an opponent if she thought it was best for the people of Mississauga.
Hazel’s lasting legacy is that of a compassionate and formidable leader whose dedication to public service will never be forgotten. The City of Mississauga, Greater Toronto and the Province of Ontario are better places because of her leadership.
I consider it a privilege and an honour to have called Hazel McCallion my colleague and my friend. Her wisdom, guidance and feisty approach to community service will be greatly missed.
Today, we celebrate Hurricane Hazel as a once-in-a-generation leader.
Flags at York Region facilities will remain lowered in honour of Hazel McCallion.
