Emergency Management
York Region and its municipal partners each have emergency management programs and plans in place.
Whether an emergency (a major threat of major proportions that may cause serious harm to people or substantial damage to property) is caused by people, technology or nature, these programs and plans are designed to protect the people and property of the region.
In the event of an emergency:
- York Region and the local and area Municipalities handle emergencies most of the time
- Larger emergencies are typically coordinated in collaboration with local municipal partners from the Regional Emergency Operations Centre
- Emergency operations would be coordinated by the Regional Emergency Control Group (RECG) and other key personnel
- Emergencies can also escalate up to provincial and federal governments, if necessary
York Region maintains compliance with Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act by:
- Identifying and assessing the most likely risks and hazards in the community
- Preparing the Regional Emergency Plan for handling relevant threats as identified in the Hazard Identified Risk Assessment (referred to as the “HIRA”)
- Annually testing the emergency plan by conducting regular emergency exercises
- Increasing awareness on emergency preparedness by educating the public and York Region employees
