Flags lowered at York Region facilities in recognition of National Day of Mourning
Today, on National Day of Mourning, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York stand together with residents across our communities to observe a moment of silence in honour of those who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents. We also share this moment with the families and friends of fallen workers who mourn their loss every day.
National Day of Mourning provides us all an opportunity to pause and pay our respects to those we have lost. It also offers an opportunity for workers and employers to reflect on workplace safety and give thought as to how we can work together to prevent future work-related tragedies and ensure everyone can make it home safe at the end of each day.
York Region remains committed to the health and safety of all our employees and all who work in our communities. Everyone has the right to feel safe at work. Through diligent and deliberate actions carried out by both employers and workers, we can all ensure healthier and safer workplaces.
In recognition of this important day and in memory of those who have lost their lives in work-related incidents, flags at York Region facilities have been lowered to half-mast. Regional Council, staff and residents are also asked to pause for a moment of silence at 11 a.m. to remember those who are no longer with us and to think about those who have suffered lasting impacts from a workplace injury.
On behalf of Regional Council, I extend my deepest sympathies to those who have lost a loved one to a work-related incident and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the health and safety of all workers in our communities.
