York Region celebrates National Day of Service and commemorates 9/11
On the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York honours the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost and offers condolences to all who lost loved ones in this horrific act of violence.
On this day in 2001, the world watched with horror as the United States came under attack. We witnessed firefighters, police officers, paramedics, military personnel and other first responders risk everything so others may live. At the same time, Canadians across the country rallied to the sides of our American neighbours, opening our hearts and homes to help them recover.
Today, on the 22nd anniversary of this tragic moment in history, we honour those who demonstrated compassion, strength and courage in the face of adversity, and those who continue to make sacrifices in service to their communities by recognizing National Day of Service.
9/11 will always be a dark day in history, but it also serves as a call to action. Today is an opportunity to come together to honour the service and sacrifices of so many through charitable activities and community service. It is an opportunity to turn a day of pain and grief into a day of giving.
Today, and all year long, I encourage York Region residents to honour the lives lost in 9/11 and the selfless service of others by engaging in charitable activities and dedicating ourselves to community service.
On behalf of Regional Council and the more than 1.2 million people who call our communities home, we remember the lives lost on September 11th and continue to give thanks to those whose service contributes to a strong, caring, safe York Region.
