York Region $3.2 billion operating budget approved for 2024
Newmarket – York Regional Council is committing to $3.2 billion in operating expenditures in 2024. Working as the day-to-day budget, the Operating budget is divided into three main parts: 39% for direct program costs (including contracted services), 32% for salaries and benefits supporting Regional service delivery and 29% to support the Region's Fiscal Strategy, including contributions to reserves.
All components of the budget align with York Region’s four Strategic Plan priorities. Some of the operating projects and initiatives scheduled in 2024 include:
Foster Economic Prosperity
- Maintaining a safe and efficient road network and transit system: Public Works - Transportation
- Leveraging the YorkTrax development tracking tool to streamline processes and achieve faster turnaround times for over 2,000 development applications annually: Corporate Management
- Fostering an environment that attracts businesses and grows employment by continuing to implement York Region’s Economic Development Action Plan - Corporate Management
Support Community Well-being
- Delivering 123 billion litres of clean, safe drinking water to protect public health: Public Works – Environmental Services
- Hiring 46 more York Regional Police sworn and civilian officers to address the needs of a larger population and the provincially mandated Community Safety and Well-being Plan: York Regional Police
- Adding 34 new permanent staff in Paramedic Services to ensure the Region continues to meet response time targets: Community and Health Services
- Continuing to catch up on routine publicly funded immunizations for children and youth while maintaining COVID-19 vaccination operations, prevention and control measures: Community and Health Services
Drive Environmental Stewardship
- Managing approximately 400,000 tonnes of waste and diverting more than 90% from landfill: Public Works – Environmental Services
- Continuing implementation of updated Long Term Water Conservation Strategy, focusing on reducing demand for water: Public Works – Environmental Services
- Updating the Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan and take inventory of planned initiatives: Public Works – Environmental Services
Efficiently Deliver Trusted Services
- Advancing digital initiatives, professional services, technology solutions and hardware to improve customer service and support program delivery: Community and Health Services
- Supporting prudent financial management and fiscal sustainability by contributing to reserves, including asset management and debt servicing: Corporate Management
- Continuing implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance Reporting Framework: Corporate Management
