Heat Warning Issued for York Region
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Heat Warning on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 that is expected to last until Thursday, August 1, 2024.
York Region Public Health is advising residents to take extra precautions to stay safe in the heat. High temperatures, high humidity, lack of shade and minimal air movement can cause heat-related illnesses, ranging from minor heat rashes and muscle cramps to hot weather emergencies like heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
Everyone is at risk, especially older adults, infants, young children, people who work or exercise outdoors and those with certain medical conditions.
Remember to check on friends, family and neighbours who may be at risk.
Find ways to stay cool

- If you do not have air conditioning, go to cool places within your community, such as local libraries, community centres, public pools, and shopping malls
- Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight
Drink extra fluids
- Increase your fluid intake regardless of your activity level
- Drink plenty of water before feeling thirsty
Reduce physical activity, especially in the full sun
- Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early in the morning or later in the evening
- Reduce sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and when the UV Index is reported to reach three (moderate) or higher
- If you must be outdoors in the heat, rest frequently to allow your body temperature to cool down
- Avoid sun exposure by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or use an umbrella
- Wear sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher
Should the heat warning continue beyond Thursday, York Region may issue an Extended Heat Warning.
