August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day
Every year on August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day, also referred to World Poisoning Awareness Day, is observed around the world.
This annual campaign is a reminder of the devastating impact of drug poisoning on individuals, families, and communities. It provides the opportunity to show compassion and empathy, acknowledging that opioid overdose deaths are preventable. The day also draws attention to the harms caused by unregulated toxic drugs. These drugs are cut or mixed with substances such as benzodiazepines, xylazine, fentanyl or carfentanil, often causing increased sedation and stronger or different effects than anticipated.
This year’s theme is #TogetherWeCan, highlighting the importance and power of people coming together to:
- Remember those who have died
- Acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind
- Spread the message about the tragedy of drug poisoning
- Stimulate action and discussion about evidence-informed overdose prevention and drug policy

- Use non-stigmatizing language when speaking about people who use drugs
- Include people with lived and living experience in the planning and the work related to substance use
- Review policies and programs that contribute to or perpetuate stigma
- Increase knowledge of harm reduction, supports and treatment services available in York Region
