York Region extends congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney
On behalf of York Regional Council and our more than 1.26 million residents, I extend my sincere congratulations to the Right Honourable Mark Carney on becoming Canada’s 24th Prime Minister. His leadership comes at a pivotal time, and we look forward to working with him and his government to protect our communities, strengthen our economy and advance the priorities that matter most to York Region residents.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his years of public service and his government’s efforts to strengthen communities across Canada. York Region has appreciated our collaboration on critical priorities, including infrastructure investments, economic development and housing initiatives.
As one of Ontario’s fastest-growing communities and a key economic driver, York Region is home to a diverse and innovative business sector. With approximately 2,900 companies exporting $14.6 billion in goods and services in 2023 – 81% of which was destined for U.S. markets – our local economy relies on fair and open trade. Unjust tariffs from the United States and China threaten local jobs and economic stability, and we welcome strong federal leadership in standing up for Canadian businesses and workers. A strong economy is the foundation of strong communities, and we remain committed to working with all levels of government to ensure continued prosperity.
At the same time, we recognize a growing population requires the right infrastructure to support new housing and vibrant communities. Investments in water, wastewater and transit infrastructure are critical to unlocking housing supply and ensuring sustainable growth. Addressing the housing crisis requires a collaborative approach, and York Region is ready to work with the federal government to deliver the infrastructure needed to support our residents.
Protecting the well-being and safety of our communities remains a top priority. Homelessness, mental health and addiction are complex issues that demand a coordinated response and long-term investment. Regional Council is committed to working with all levels of government to ensure residents have access to the support and services they need to thrive.
York Region has a strong history of collaboration with the federal government, and we look forward to continuing this partnership under Prime Minister Carney’s leadership. Congratulations once again to the Prime Minister and we wish him success in the important work ahead.
