About the Holland Landing Lagoons
- For several years, The Regional Municipality of York and Town of East Gwillimbury have been working together to decommission the Lagoons
- Since the mid-1970s, the Lagoons treated municipal wastewater from approximately 4,000 residents in the community of Holland Landing
- As the Lagoons are no longer being used for daily operations and the likelihood for potential odours is now greatly reduced
- York Region will continue to monitor odours by conducting odour sampling and air dispersion modelling around the Lagoons even if they are only being used in exceptional cases
- Collecting and treating wastewater can sometimes cause unpleasant odours around York Region’s wastewater facilities
- These odours do not cause any threat to public health or the environment
When will the Holland Landing Lagoons be used – what is an exceptional situation?
Until the Lagoons are fully decommissioned in 2028, they will only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as extreme heavy rain, snow fall or operational needs that may cause the Lagoons to fill and require emptying.
In the case of heavy rainfall or snow melting, filling the Lagoons may help spread the flow of water from other pumping stations.
How will wastewater from the community of Holland Landing be serviced?
York Region recently completed construction on the Henderson Sewage Pumping Station and upgrades to the Aurora Sewage Pumping Station to provide additional wastewater services for the Towns of Aurora, Newmarket and East Gwillimbury.

Can I still report an odour even if the Lagoons are not active or being used?
As the Lagoons are no longer being used for daily operations, the likelihood for potential odours is now greatly reduced.
Odours lasting more than one to two days coming from a York Region facility are considered unusual and should be reported.
