Celebrating International Day of Forests
On Friday, March 21, 2025, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York join communities around the world in celebrating International Day of Forests – a day to recognize the incredible role forests play in our environment, our economy and our everyday lives. This year's theme, Forests and Education, is a reminder of the importance of learning about and protecting these natural spaces for generations to come.
Here in York Region, we are fortunate to have the York Regional Forest, a true gem that provides a place for residents to connect with nature, find peace and enjoy the outdoors. Whether enjoying a quiet walk under the trees, a bike ride along the trails or simply taking in the changing seasons, the York Regional Forest offers something for everyone. It’s also a vital part of our commitment to a greener future – helping to improve air quality, support wildlife and create healthier, more vibrant communities.
Through York Region’s Greening Strategy, we are working toward a 40% canopy cover by 2051, building on the strong foundation already established. Every tree planted and every hectare preserved brings us closer to that goal, ensuring future generations can enjoy the same natural beauty we cherish today.
Spanning over 2,600 hectares with 22 public tracts, the York Regional Forest is not just a place to visit – it’s a living, breathing example of environmental stewardship in action. With over 150 kilometres of scenic trails, including nearly seven kilometres of accessible pathways, it welcomes people of all abilities to experience the benefits of nature. More than just a recreational space, the York Regional Forest also serves as an outdoor classroom, teaching us about conservation, sustainability and the vital role trees play in our lives.
On this International Day of Forests, I encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate the forests around us and the many ways the natural environment enriches our lives.
