Statement on U.S. Tariffs and Economic Resilience
Tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian imports pose a significant challenge to our economy, with the potential for additional tariffs adding to an already uncertain economic landscape. This threaten to increase costs for businesses and consumers, disrupt supply chains and put local jobs at risk. In the face of this volatility, York Region remains steadfast in our commitment to protecting our local economy, supporting businesses and ensuring the long-term prosperity of our communities.
Now more than ever, we must come together – government, businesses and residents – to support local industries and strengthen our supply chains. York Region’s Procurement Office is taking proactive steps to manage the impact of these tariffs, ensuring we remain financially responsible while minimizing disruptions. We are working closely with municipal partners, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada to advocate for fair trade policies that protect our workers and businesses.
One of the most powerful ways we can respond is to Shop Local. Supporting local businesses keeps our economy strong, protects jobs and reduces reliance on international markets. Whether it’s buying from local farmers, manufacturers or retailers, every dollar spent in York Region helps build resilience against external economic pressures.
York Region joins our federal, provincial, municipal and business partners and stand up for Canadian industries. We call on you, our residents and businesses, to stand together and support one another. When we invest in our own communities, we strengthen the foundation of our local economy and build a more self-sufficient and secure future.
York Region is committed to working with all levels of government, industry partners and our residents to navigate these challenges and emerge stronger. Together, we champion economic growth, fairness and the well-being of our communities.
Now is the time to stand together, buy local and support the businesses that support us.
