Housing York Inc. marks 20 years as a leader in affordable housing
Founded in 2003, Housing York Inc. (HYI), York Region’s housing company, is the largest community housing provider in the Region, providing homes to more than 4,500 residents across 3,027 units in 37 properties. For 20 years, HYI has been building inclusive communities residents are proud to call home.
HYI communities, located across all nine cities, townships and towns, include townhomes and apartment buildings to serve seniors, families and individuals in need of affordable housing options. In 2023, HYI welcomed 449 new households, a significant increase from 211 new households housed in 2022. A key contributor to this increase was the opening of Unionville Commons, a new 265-unit building for seniors located in the City of Markham.
With a growing need for more purpose-built rental options, construction and planning continues for three other community housing locations including Mosaic House in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville as well as developments in the Town of Newmarket and City of Markham.
HYI buildings support healthy communities through sustainable design and proactive management. Last year, HYI invested $11.3 million in capital repairs and upgrades across 105 projects to ensure our buildings continue to provide quality homes for our residents. Seven of these projects were part of HYI’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring financial sustainability. Combined, these projects will result in an estimated $106,000 in annual utility savings and 227.3 tonnes reduction in CO2 emissions.
