Roads and Traffic Operations Centre
The Roads and Traffic Operations Centre uses state of the art technology to improve the reliability of travel throughout York Region. The centre provides commuters with information to better plan their travel and keeps stakeholders informed of traffic conditions. It’s helping over a million people get to travel destinations efficiently and safely.
Traffic cameras, traffic management systems and weather tracking software allow staff to address and resolve traffic issues, triage local requests and respond immediately to incidents. The centre operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
When a collision, watermain break, debris or construction occurs, staff can take immediate action to reduce travel disruption. Actions can include adjusting traffic signal timing to enhance travel times, setting up road side signs to give drivers advance notice, dispatching road crews for maintenance or contacting York Regional Police for traffic control.
Weather tracking systems and vehicle tracking applications are used during inclement weather to help road crews prepare and monitor progress. Software systems are also used to track lane and road closures and road permit information. The centre keeps local municipalities, police and emergency services informed through broadcast emails and partners with Waze to keep commuters up to date.
By installing 430+ bluetooth sensors on the Regional road network, the Region is measuring travel times to identify areas that need to be addressed through short term measures and long-term planning.
The Road and Traffic Operations Centre provides valuable insight into travel patterns and brings flexibility to adapt to changing road conditions to enhance travel experience on Regional roads.
