Oak Ridges Air Management Facility

What is happening?

York Region is constructing the new Oak Ridges Air Management Facility (AMF). The AMF will be constructed at 57 King Road, in the City of Richmond Hill. When complete, the AMF will provide treatment and collection of odourous air in the York Durham Sewage System and resolve odour nuisances in the area.

How will the AMF be constructed?

Construction of the Air Management Facility will involve the drilling of deep piles to build the foundation and walls of the facility. A ductwork tunnel will be built that connects the facility to  the York Durham Sewage System. The ductwork tunnel will be built using microtunnelling technology which utilizes a small tunnel boring machine creating a path that connects the AMF to the sewage system. 

What is microtunnelling?

Microtunnelling is a construction method where a machine will tunnel underground, installing ductwork approximately 5 to 7 metres below the surface. The use of microtunnelling minimizes the impact on local traffic and residents.

How will construction of the AMF impact the community, motorists, and public transit users?

There will be additional truck traffic in the area, construction-related noise and dust, though every effort to minimize it will be made. Traffic and public transit users may be impacted due to the construction compound located in the northbound traffic lanes near Yonge Street and King Road. The northbound traffic lanes and the turning lane will be shifted to maintain the flow of traffic, however, there will be periodic delays. Traffic monitoring personnel will be on-site, as needed, to assist with the movement of traffic and reduce delays.

Will there be construction-related noise impacts? 

Noise from construction activities will comply with local municipality bylaws.

Will odours in the area increase during construction? 

Odour resulting from construction activities is not expected. 

Will the work impact YRT service?

York Region Transit (YRT) bus service along Yonge Street will be maintained; however, the location of bus stop #4721 at Yonge Street and Sunset Beach Road, will be shifted slightly south to a location in front of the Oak Ridges Retirement Living building. Will there be sidewalk disruptions?

Temporary sidewalks will be installed and directional signage will be in place to help guide pedestrians.
